3-day tour Ankogel-Hochalmspitze-Säuleck

This three-day round tour is probably the most impressive thing the eastern Hohe Tauern has to offer.

Requirements:

• Surefootedness, a head for heights
• Condition for 8-10 hours
• Altitude difference: up to 1900hm
• Climbing difficulty: I-II

1 day

The Ankogelbahn takes you up to approx. 2600m. From the mountain station you march along the Tauernhöhenweg to the Radeckscharte. From the saddle it goes over pathless terrain to the Kl. Ankogel 3096m, getting steeper and steeper over an exposed ridge (difficulty I) to the summit, which is reached, secured by rope.

After crossing the summit, it goes to the Kleinelendkees and finally to the descent to the Zwischenelendscharte. Past the Schwarzhorn lakes and the waterfall of the Fallbach, the hike leads to the Osnabrückerhütte 2020m.

2 day

The second day brings us on the queen of the Hohe Tauern, the Hochalmspitze 3360m – one of the most beautiful mountains of the Eastern Alps as a counterpart to the Großglockner. Towering over four valleys, surrounded on four sides by glaciers, it is particularly beautiful, supported by wide and massive slab walls and pillars.

Early in the morning we hike along the lateral moraine of the Großelendkees to the beginning of the glacier. We walk on the glacier until the upper glacier basin and then steeply through a firn gully to the Preimlscharte 2953m. Later we cross the Hochalmkees to the beginning of the boulder ridge, over which we reach the Hochalmspitze 3360m with increasing steepness.

The descent is via the southeast ridge “Rudolfstädter Weg” (difficulty I-II), past the “Steinernen Mandl’n”. This area is secured with fixed steel cables. After the climb we come to the Trippkees, which we cross to the lower end, and then hike along the Schwarzenburger path to the Giessenerhütte 2218m.

3rd day

We start with a rewarding hike over the “Hessen Weg” to the Mallnitzer Scharte. From there it goes north, at the foot of the Gr. Crossing Gößspitze, over easy boulder terrain via the south ridge to the Säuleck 3086m. The way back leads us to the Grazer Schartl and further down a marked trail to Arthur v. Schmid house. After a short rest, we go through the Dösental down to Mallnitz, where our three-day tour ends again.
