3-day tour Ankogel-Hochalmspitze-Säuleck

This three-day round tour is probably the most impressive one that the eastern Hohe Tauern mountains have to offer.

First day

Take the Ankogelbahn cable car to approx. 2,600 m. Hike from the mountain station to the Radeckscharte along the Tauernhöhenweg. From Radeckscharte it’s pathless terrain to the Kleiner Ankogel (3,096 m), increasingly steeper across an exposed ridge (difficulty I) to the summit, which is reached while secured by rope.

Having crossed the summit, you take the Kleinelendkees and descend to the Zwischenelendscharte. The hike leads past the Schwarzhorn lakes and the Fallbach waterfall to the Osnabrückerhütte hut (2,020 m).

Altitude difference:

  • Ascent: 650 m
  • Descent: 1,200 m
  • Endurance: 6-7 hours

Second day

The queen’s stage of this tour on the second day leads us to the queen of the Hohe Tauern, the Hochalmspitze (3,360 m) – one of the most beautiful mountains in the East Alps and the counterpart to the Grossglockner. Towering over four valleys and surrounded by glaciers on four sides, the mountain’s wide and massive slab walls and pillars show off its particularly beautiful side.

We start early in the morning and hike along the side moraine of the Grosselendkees to the start of the glacier. We walk on the glacier to the upper glacier basin and then take a steep firn snow-encrusted runway to the Preimlscharte (2,953 m). Later, we cross the Hochalmkees to the tailbone of the block ridge, which we’ll take to the Hochalmspitze (3,360 m) with increasing steepness.

The southeast ridge “Rudolfstädter Weg” (difficulty I-II), past the “Steinernen Mandl’n”, is used for the descent. This area is secured with fixed steel cables. After the climb we reach the Trippkees, which we cross to its lower end, before hiking on the Schwarzenburger Weg to the Gießnerhütte hut (2,218 m).

Altitude difference:

  • Ascent: 1,340 m
  • Descent: 1,140 m
  • Endurance: 7-9 hours

Third day

We start with a worthwhile hike on the “Hessen Weg” to the Mallnitzer Scharte. From here, we go north, cross the foot of the Grosse Gössspitze, across mild block terrain taking the south ridge to the Säuleck (3,086 m). The way back leads us to the Grazer Schartl and onwards along a marked climbing path down to the Arthur v. Schmid Haus. After a brief rest, we hike through the Dösental down to Mallnitz, where our three-day tour ends.
