Ortler 3,905 m

The highest mountain in South Tyrol. Recognizable from afar by its famous summit plateau, it forms one of the landmarks of the Eastern Alps.

The triumvirate that can be seen from Sulden, Königspitze, Zebru and Ortler are also called the men of Sulden by the mountaineers. But there are many other interesting climbs in the area such as Suldenspitze, Zufallspitze or Cevedale to name a few.


Normal route via Payerhütte

Requirements:

  • Good condition for 300 meters of altitude/hour,
  • Climbing difficulty II – III
  • Surefootedness, head for heights, crampon experience

1 day:

Meeting point at the parking lot Langensteinbahn ( chairlift ) in Sulden. Common ascent on beautifully laid out hiking trails, past the Tabaretta hut to the Payerhütte ( 3029m )

  • Ascent: 1000 meters in altitude
  • 3.5 hours

2 day:

In the light of the headlamps we start our tour towards Ortler. In a good 1 hour of ridge climbing II-III, past the Tabarettspitze, short via ferrata we reach the glacier at the so-called Bärenloch. From there we go up with the crampons over about 40 degrees steep terrain towards the summit plateau. The path continues without difficulty until we reach the summit and are rewarded by a breathtaking view. Descent on the same path to the Payerhütte and further into the valley to the cars.

  • Ascent: ca.1000 Altitude meters
  • Descent: 2000 meters of altitude
  • 10 hours total walking time

Backbone

The Hintergrat is one of the really great tours in the Eastern Alps. The ascent via the back ridge is more demanding but only slightly more difficult in terms of climbing technique than the normal route. A varied crossing of the Ortler. The descent is via the normal route.

  • Good condition for 400 meters of altitude/hour,
  • Climbing difficulty II – IV
  • Surefootedness, head for heights, crampon experience

1 day:

Meeting point at the parking lot Langensteinbahn ( chairlift ) in Sulden. Common ascent over beautifully laid out hiking trails to the Hintergrathütte 2661m.

  • Ascent: 700 meters in altitude
  • Walking time: 2,5 hours

2 day:

After an early start in the morning, we are already looking forward to climbing the ridge. We also cross two glacier passages until we reach the summit of Ortler. The descent via the normal route leads us over the Ortlerferner and the last hour to the Payerhütte we may still climb a bit. From here we descend via the well-marked hiking trail to Sulden to the parking lot.

  • Ascent: 1300hm / Descent: 2000hm
  • Walking time: 10 hours
