4000s ski touring week around Zermatt

Spitziflue, Allalinhorn, Strahlhorn, Breithorn and Signalkuppe – a delicacy in Valais with grandiose descents


Sunday:

Meeting point at 6 p.m. at the Hotel Bergfreund in Herbriggen. Welcome and discussion of the tour days


Monday:

Drive to Zermatt, take the cable car to the Blauherd station. Ascent to Spitziflue at 3,260 m with subsequent descent to Täsch. Return to Herbriggen and overnight in the hotel.

  • Ascent: 720 meters in altitude
  • Descent: 1,500 meters in altitude
  • 5-6 hours

Tuesday:

Drive to Saas Fee and take the mountain railway to Mittelallalin. Ascent to the Allalinhorn at 4,027 m. Descent to the Britaniahütte at 3,030 m.

  • Ascent: 600 meters in altitude
  • Descent: 1,000 meters in altitude
  • 4-5 hours

Wednesday:

Ascent over the Allalin Glacier to the Strahlhorn at 4,128 m and over the northwest ridge to the summit. Descent from the Strahlhorn over the Adlerpass to Zermatt. A total of 2,500 vertical meters of descent await from the Adler-Findel Glacier to Zermatt. Return to Herbriggen and overnight in the hotel.

  • Descent: 2,500 meters in altitude
  • 8 hours

Thursday:

After breakfast, drive to Zermatt and take the lifts up to Kl. Matterhorn. Ascent to the Breithorn at 4,126 m and then descent over the Schwarztor and the Schwärzegletscher to the Gorner Glacier at an altitude of 2,500 meters. Subsequent ascent over the Gorner glacier to the Monterosahütte at 2,795 m

  • Ascent: 800 meters in altitude
  • Descent: 2,500 meters in altitude
  • 6-7 hours

Friday:

Ascent over the Grenz glacier to Signalkuppe at 4,554 m to Cabanna Margherita, the highest hut in the Alps. Long descent over the Grenzgletscher and Gornergletscher to Zermatt. Return to Herbriggen and overnight in the hotel.

  • Ascent: 1,750 meters in altitude
  • Descent: 2,700 meters in altitude

Saturday:

Departure after breakfast


Requirements:

  • safe parallel skiing in all types of snow
  • Mastery of walking with skins and the hairpin
  • Surefootedness
  • Experience in using crampons and ice ax
  • Condition of approx. 6-8 hours
